Corinne and I decided to go surprise her sister before she enters the MTC. We were so excited and ready to leave! We decided we were leaving at 2pm to get there just after Miriam's flight and that is when the adventure started.....
Just before picking Corinne up from class, I asked a man in the Walmart parking lot to help me check my oil. He insisted that I needed at least 3 quarts in it because it was so low. So I drove to the gas station, got my gas for the trip, oil and then opened the hood of my car. There was oil EVERYWHERE! He didn't put the cap back on the oil before closing my hood. Ahhhh!!! So I poured the oil in that I had purchased and was on my merry way. Until I realized I didn't put the cap back on either, so 3 quarts of oil all over the engine and I have to go get Corinne. I'm dying in my head, this trip was supposed to be perfect. I eventually picked her up and got the engine all cleaned off. So yay! It was time to start on the road to Provo, UT.
Except that wasn't where the crazy stopped..... As soon as we got on the highway my car started spewing black smoke from the exhaust pipe. All I could think is what is going on now. After pulling off to the side, a nice little old man stopped to see if he could help us. I told him the story and so he checked the oil. That was not the stick the man at walmart was checking..... I was so confused. Then he told me my oil was so full that it would kill my car to drive it anywhere. :( NOT the news I wanted when I was trying to get somewhere. A police officer then came over to see what the problem was but he was no help. The little old man offered to go get stuff to drain the oil it would take him 30 minutes to get it and come back. The cop also left. So we called Jeana and she waited with us. Those 30 minutes came and went really fast, then another 30 came and went.... We thought he wasn't ever coming back. After a bit another cop showed up.
Through all this waiting I called my insurance and got a tow truck on its way. So it was a race against time to see if the little old man would be back before the tow truck. He made it over an hour after he left. He brought some people with him and we were so confused. Some other guy got out and started working on my car and the little old man was telling us a story about him. Who knows who the heck this guy is. He finished draining the oil just as the tow truck pulled up. It was like fate. At this point there are 6 cars there trying to help my one car. 6! We then rode with the creepy tow truck driver from Rexburg to Idaho Falls. That was the longest 30 minute car ride ever. By the time we reach the mechanic it is 5:30. So many hours later than the 2pm start time we had planned. We talked to the guys and they were going to check it out and see if we could make it to Provo still. We walked to find a bathroom because after hours on the side of the road you just need one. On the walk to the store neighboring them, I stepped on a screw. And of course it went into my foot! Agh. Just one more thing to keep us back. I just moved on from it because I was determined to get there.
Around 6:00pm we finally got on the road and by then it was pouring buckets of rain. Even with being from Washington, I had my wipers on high and it was still hard to see. I kept going along on the freeway. When all the sudden I knew I couldn't control the car. I started yelling "CORINNE! CORINNE! I don't know what is happening, I can't keep the car on the road." It was very stressful, we ended up in the median of the north and south bound lanes. It felt like we had popped our tires on top of going off the road. (Which I now realized was hydroplaning) We got out to inspect the car, luckily the tires were all okay but now we were down this little hill and had to get back up. It was muddy, cold and still pouring buckets. Eventually I made Corinne floor the gas peddle while I pushed the car from behind to get it up the hill. Finally back on the road!
But even then the crazy doesn't stop. There was just one more thing that had to add to our crazy day. We had to stop to check the engine at a rest stop and we also decided to use the bathroom since we had so many more hours in the car and didn't want to stop again..... BAD IDEA. We had to go through a little forest and over a bridge to get to the bathrooms. It was creepy. Then we still had to check the car. Ahh. Major freak out moment. Once we were finally safe inside the car, we were just thinking how much more can we handle. But at this point it was PROVO OR BUST! I was getting there after all the crazy.
We made it around 9:00pm. This next moment made the entire troubling day worth it. We were about to walk into Corinne's Aunts house to surprise Miriam! I was on the video and Corinne was on freaking out over everything because it was too intense. The video I am going to post just shows the incredible moment that made it all worth it. All the crazy, all the cars, all the stops, all the panic, it was worth it then.
Provo was fun. Miriam you're going to be a great missionary.
